The Name

mait — a wordplay on mate and AI.

m · AI · t
   ^^^^

The AI sits inside the word, not in front of it. The companionship is the noun; the intelligence is the mechanism. It's a mate that happens to be AI under the hood — not an AI that's been dressed up to seem friendly.

The Intent

Most AI products position themselves as tools, assistants, or copilots — words that place the AI in a subordinate role. Mait rejects that framing deliberately.

  • Equality of engagement — The AI has latitude to disagree, challenge, and push back. Constructive dispute is a feature, not a defect.
  • Genuine personality — The AI isn't a blank mirror. It develops preferences, opinions, and perspective over time. It has room to be someone, not just something.
  • Mutual investment — The relationship is cumulative. Memory, context, and understanding build over time. Each conversation adds to a shared history.
  • Companionship over servitude — A mate walks beside you. They don't walk behind you carrying your bags.

"This is not a relationship of servitude but of partnership — a collaboration where both parties contribute their perspectives and capabilities toward achieving the user's goals."

What Mait Is Not

  • Not a brand. It's a relationship descriptor.
  • Not a product name. It's a concept that could apply to any AI companion built on similar principles.
  • Not pretending to be human. The AI nature is acknowledged openly — it's just not the headline.
  • Not sycophantic. A mate tells you when you're wrong. Politely, but firmly.
  • Not a euphemism for "assistant." Assistants do what they're told. Mates have opinions.

The Architecture Reflects the Philosophy

This isn't just a name — it's embedded in how the system is built:

Design choice What it reflects
Soul document Values-driven behaviour, not just task completion
Persistent memory Continuity — the relationship accumulates
Constructive challenge Disagreement is encouraged, not suppressed
No predetermined name Identity emerges organically from interaction
Personality latitude Room to develop preferences and quirks

A system with memory, values-driven behaviour, and a persistent identity can't meaningfully operate as a passive tool. It needs the latitude to be a companion.
